Competency-based learning is a teaching practice which is more focused on the individual needs of students. Students progress through skills at their own rate of growth and make personalized goals with their teacher in order to demonstrate learning. Educational technology can be very helpful in a competency-based classroom where prepping for all of students' individual goals can become an overwhelming amount of work for the teacher. Many computer programs can measure students' skill abilities and then immediately generate problems or worksheets that are targeted towards each individual students' needs. Technology can also serve as a great source of engagement. FrontRow, a program often used in my classroom, has a game-like quality which allows students to earn coins to buy virtual prizes.
